The short story

I am an independent arbitrator in New York specializing in international and complex commercial disputes. Prior to December 2019, I was a Partner at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP and a member of its international arbitration practice group and from 1977 to 1994 a Partner/Associate, Lord Day & Lord, Barrett Smith. I am experienced in a broad range of substantive areas including insurance and reinsurance, complex commercial contracts, acquisition agreements, long-term supply contracts, purchase price adjustments, art law, product liability, and maritime arbitration.


I have served as Panel Chair, solo arbitrator and tribunal member in a variety of matters. I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), I am listed on the Panel of Arbitrators of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), on the American Arbitration Association Commercial, Large Complex Dispute and Consumer rosters and on the Panel of Neutrals of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). I previously served as the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association International Arbitration Committee.


I graduated from Vassar College in 1974 and Columbia Law School in 1977 and hold a Diploma in International Arbitration.

§  Defense of U.S. government contractor in ICC arbitration seated in Dubai concerning alleged fraud in connection with construction contract in Afghanistan.

§  Representation of technology provider to financial services industry before ICDR panel in dispute with its former Chief Executive Officer and founder.

§  Representation of electric utility company in AAA arbitration concerning dispute over lease agreements for coal fired power generation plant.

§  Representation of operator of liquid petroleum pipeline and storage facility in breach of contract arbitration.

§  Representation of Mexican chemical manufacturer in ICC arbitration with Argentinean customer.

§  Representation of a European containerized shipping company in a series of international arbitrations before the ICDR arising out of an $800 million acquisition of a U.S. shipping company.  Issues included post-closing purchase price adjustment and allocation of liabilities.

§  Representation of a shipping line in arbitration before the Society of Maritime Arbitrators arising out of grounding of vessel in Capetown, South Africa. 

§  Defense of international insurers in ad hoc international arbitration in connection with $25 million claim on policy of efficacy insurance relating to construction of wastepaper recycling plant. 

§  Defense of major supermarket chain in $50 million breach of contract case before the AAA relating to agreement to provide advertising. 

§  Defense of $20 million breach of contract claim involving trucking services in AAA proceeding. 

§  Defense of garment manufacturer in AAA arbitration proceeding relating to claims of breach of joint venture agreement.
